How to find out what courses are available

All Insider Learning Center courses are listed in the Course Catalog.

Access to some features described below may not be part of your subscription. If you cannot view certain features on the site, ask your administrator about feature availability.

In the Course Catalog, you can find courses in three ways:

  1. Browse by Department: Click on a department name or icon to see a list of all courses (online instructor-led and self-study) in that department. Click on Browse All Departments to see an alphabetical list of all courses.
  2. Search Courses: The search feature allows you to search for courses by Title Only or by Title and Table of Content.
  3. New Courses: This area lists the most recently added courses. Click on a course title to get to the syllabus for that course.

How to find out when a course will be taught again

If you want to know when a particular course will be taught again (because you missed registration for the last session, for example):

  1. Go to the Course Catalog, and find a course by browsing the departments, searching for a course, or viewing the new courses list.
  2. Click the course title or the Show Course Shortcuts button.
  3. Look at the dates the class is offered. Some courses have more than one date listed, which means you can register for the course that begins on the date you're interested in taking.
  4. Sometimes instead of seeing the class dates, you'll see a Notify When Open button and the month the class is expected to open. Click on this button to be notified via email when the course opens for registration.

How to find course requirements

To find the specific requirements for any Insider Learning Center course, go to the Course Catalog (you can also view requirements for courses listed in My Courses).

  1. Go to the Course Catalog.
  2. Click on the course title of the course you're interested in finding the requirements for, to go to the course syllabus.
  3. In the syllabus, you'll find the course description, any specific hardware and software requirements, any textbook requirements, and a week-by-week syllabus of the course.

If you are unfamiliar with a hardware or software term, look it up in Webopedia, an online dictionary of computer and internet terminology. If you still have questions about the requirements, you can post a note in the classroom during the first week of the course.

What it means to be an auditor rather than a full student

When you register for a course, you have a choice of taking the course as a full student or as an auditor. (If the course has already reached its limit of full students, then auditor will be the only option available.) The table below shows the differences in access between full students and auditors.

full student auditor
read messages in classroom yes yes
post messages in classroom yes no
register for CEUs yes no
get course completion certificate yes yes
access community forum after course is over yes yes
read messages in community forum yes yes
post messages in community forum yes yes

*Note: If the course is not full, you can change your status from auditor to full student, or vice versa, while the course is in session. You can't change your status once the course is complete.

How to register for a course

  1. Go to the Course Catalog, and find a course by browsing the departments, searching for a course, or viewing the new courses list.

  2. When you find a course you're interested in, click the title of the course you want to take.

  3. Click the Register For on the course syllabus page.

  4. Choose your registration options for full or audit status and whether you want your name made available to vendors who may have products related to your course.

  5. Click Register to submit your registration. When your registration is complete, you'll receive immediate confirmation on the screen that your registration has been accepted and recorded.

  6. Once you've registered for a course, the course appears on My Courses page. This page lists the courses for which you're currently registered, including courses that are now in session and courses that have not yet started. My Courses also displays your Future Courses and Past Courses.

A week before the course, you will receive an e-mail reminding you that your course is scheduled for the following week. If you do not receive a course notification e-mail, chances are there is an error in the e-mail address in your registration record. Check your address by going to Student Services, Edit Personal Information. Correct your address if needed.

If you change your e-mail address, be sure to update your registration information at Insider Learning Center.

If you run into a problem in the registration process, or if a course you registered for does not appear on your My Courses page, go to Contact Us, and complete a service request.

How to change your course status (full student or auditor)

The default setting for full or audit is set in Student Options in Student Services. For example, if you select Audit as your default registration type, the next time you register for an online instructor-led course, the Audit button will be selected. The default setting won't change unless you change it in Student Services.

However, if you want to change your status in a course from full student to auditor, or vice versa without changing the default setting, the easiest way is to change it from the My Courses page. (You can also change your status from the Course Catalog but you'll have to find the course first.)

To change your course status:

  1. Go to My Courses.
  2. Locate the course in either My Current Courses or My Future Courses.
  3. Click Change Registration.
  4. Check the box to change your status.
  5. Click Change Register.
  6. You'll receive onscreen confirmation of your change in registration.

What to do if the course you want is full

Each course has room for a certain number of full students and a larger number of auditors. Once a course reaches its limit, registration for that course will be closed (even if the course hasn't started yet).

If you find that a course you want is full, you can register for the course as an auditor. As an auditor, you will not be able to post messages in the classroom or interact with the instructor and other students, but you will be able to read all the course material, including lessons, assignments, and discussions. For more information on auditing, see What it means to be an auditor rather than a full student.

How to drop a course

At some point, you may want to drop a particular course for which you are registered. To drop a course:

  1. Go to My Courses.
  2. Locate the course in either My Current Courses or My Future Courses.
  3. Click on the Change Registration button.
  4. Select the Drop Me From This Class option.
  5. Click on Change Register.
  6. You'll receive onscreen confirmation of your change in registration.
